Wildlife of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is known for its rich biodiversity, with a vast array of flora and fauna that thrive in its diverse ecosystems. 

The country's tropical rainforests, high-altitude mountains, coastal mangroves, and coral reefs are home to a wide range of species, many of which are endemic to the region.  

Flora: 

Papua New Guinea is home to an estimated 20,000 plant species, including over 3,000 species of orchids. Some of the most iconic plant species in Papua New Guinea include the Raggiana bird-of-paradise flower, the yam, which is a staple crop for many communities, and the betel nut palm, which is widely used for chewing.  

Fauna:

Papua New Guinea is also known for its diverse animal life, with many unique and endangered species found throughout the country. 

Some of the most famous fauna include the tree kangaroo, which lives in the rainforest canopy, the cassowary, a large flightless bird that is considered a symbol of the country, and the birds-of-paradise, a group of highly ornate birds that are known for their elaborate courtship displays.  

The waters surrounding Papua New Guinea are also home to a diverse range of marine life, including many species of coral, fish, sharks, and sea turtles.
